The transient was discovered on 2nd May 2023 at 14:13:56 (MJD 60066.59) by Pan-STARRS as PS23cup with a discovery magnitude of w = 19.80. It was subsequently classified as a SN IIn at z = 0.020.

Sherlock Contextual Classification

Prediction: Supernova

The transient is possibly associated with ESO597-G040; a W1=13.79 mag galaxy found in the LASR catalogue. Its located 14.31" S, 9.90" W (7.0 Kpc) from the galaxy centre. A host z=0.020 implies a m - M = 34.68.
