The transient was discovered on 7th May 2023 at 22:52:37 (MJD 60071.95) by ATLAS as ATLAS23kbn with a discovery magnitude of orange = 17.49. It was subsequently classified as a SN Ia at z = 0.027.

Sherlock Contextual Classification

Prediction: Supernova

The transient is possibly associated with ESO574-G025; a J=12.91 mag galaxy found in the NED_D/SDSS/2MASS/PS1 catalogues. Its located 10.01" S, 6.28" W (5.1 Kpc) from the galaxy centre. A host distance of 89.4 Mpc implies a m - M = 34.76.
