The transient was discovered on 9th December 2018 at 05:38:24 (MJD 58461.24) by GaiaAlerts as Gaia18dtf with a discovery magnitude of G = 18.45. It was subsequently classified as a SN Ia at z = 0.050.

The transient is possibly associated with 14235099+2020260; a J=15.58 mag galaxy found in the 2MASS catalogue. It's located 32.58 arcsec S, 11.47 arcsec E from the galaxy centre.
