The transient was discovered on 13th September 2018 at 00:00:00 (MJD 58374.00) by ZTF as ZTF18abvbayb with a discovery magnitude of g = 19.97. It was subsequently classified as a SN Ia at z = 0.130.

The transient is possibly associated with SDSS J173111.18+790311.6; an r=17.37 mag galaxy found in the SDSS catalogue. It's located 3.64 arcsec N, 3.07 arcsec E from the galaxy centre.
